Au revoir, mon amis

Good morning everyone, and welcome to an incredibly early (about 6:41 am) edition of Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. I actual don't really have time to be posting today, but I decided to anyway. If I haven't told you, which is likely, considering the small amount of people I've told, I will be camping from today until Monday, up in Tobermory (avec Sean). So, that means that Joseph will be taking care of the post for Sunday, and perhaps Monday, depending on the time of my return. Thank you very much, Mr.Najem!

So, as an ode to my upcoming experience (I've never gone camping before), here is are a couple songs and a video. Enjoy.

What am I, Darlin'?

Good evening (you may notice that this post is actually being posted on Monday morning, but alas, it was written on Sunday night; I just didn't finish it) everyone, and welcome to another late night edition of Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. If you take a look to the schedule on your right (or the top of the page if you suffer from dyslexia), you will notice that today's post is going to be a Song of the Day post. So, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, the song of the day!

The Song of the Day; Cheers Darlin' - Damien Rice (Off 2003's O)

Damien Rice has, for a couple years now, remained a definite constant in his life. If you've known me anywhere from 2003 - 2008, you'd know that his CD O is always being played in my room, and my head. His masterful songwriting, and gentle guitar picking/strumming, never cease to amaze me. From strictly whispery, acoustic songs, to a soaring opera, there is not one track off 2003's O that I do not like.

Today's Song of the Day is one of my personal favorites from Mr.Rice (my top five, at least), and it encompasses strong elements of jazz. Here we see Mr.Rice, a depressed attendant at his ex-lovers wedding, singing about his deep loathe, coupled with an equally deep desire. It is definitely a unique track, with a perfect atmosphere, created by the chatting over clanking glasses in the beginning.

So, I leave you today with the Song of the Day. I hope you enjoy it.

Cheers Darlin' - Damien Rice

My mother in-law was standing by the stove, hissing like a snake

Hello everyone, and welcome to another dark Thursday night, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Tonight's post will be a rather short one, as I'm currently in the middle of a very good book, and I'd like to continue reading. So,without further ado, I present to you, the Band of the Week.

Band of the Week; The Fiery Furnaces

The Fiery Furnaces is a sibling driven indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York. They formed in 2000, and were signed to Rough Trade records in 2002. The band is made up of siblings Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger. Their debut album, Gallowsbird's Bark, was released in 2003, which received as many positive reviews as it did comparisons to The White Stripes (It is interesting to note that Meg and Jack White are not actually related, but were once married).

So, enjoy two tracks from their fifth LP, entitled Bitter Tea, which was released in 2006.

There were children crying and colours flying, all around the chosen one.

Well, hello everyone, and welcome to another burning Wednesday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. I have two very important points to make today, which will greatly influence today's post, so listen up. Tonight, I'm finally coming down from my ludicrously obsessive Neil Young-binge (a la yesterday), which has me listening to songs that are COMPLETELY different from Mr.Young. The second point is that I am finally, officially, out of grade school. This is giving me a very faux-sense of maturity (that I am completely aware of). So, beware of these things as you venture on to the rest of the post.

Tie My Hands (Feat. Robin Thicke) - Lil Wayne

A fantastically surprising soul song by Lil Wayne. This song is REALLY lifted by the soaring chorus, courtesy of Mr.Robin Thicke. It's also very interesting to note that Lil Wayne does not use any profanity, curse word, or obscenity (which is sort of his trademark?), and still keeps this song sounding fresh and amazing.

Mistaken For Strangers - The National

This is just a fantastic song. Do I need an explanation in order to post a fantastic song?

Alright, well have a relaxing evening.

There is a town in north Ontario

Hello everyone and welcome to another glorious Tuesday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. If you're wondering why my Tuesday evening is so glorious, I'm glad to inform you that it is because of one song. I find it odd how, in 3 minutes 34 seconds, Neil Young can turn a rather boring day into a delicate, glowing evening. The first line ("There is a town in north Ontario") strikes me at home, owing to the fact that I was born, and still reside, in Ontario (South Ontario, actually). So, take some time out of your evening to enjoy "Helpless".

Helpless w/ Bruce Springsteen

Helpless w/ The Band

I'm very sorry to say that I've been mouching off YouTube this evening, and I don't actually have this track! So, I'll provide you with an equally great, yet distinctively different Neil Young song.

And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made.

Hello everyone, and welcome to one of the most relieving Mondays of my entire life. For, tonight, I have finally graduated from elementary school. Now, I know that this is not at all impressive for those of you who are already in high school, or even university, but rest assured, for a 14 year old, this is a very relieving moment. So, I thought that tonight's post would be about graduation, appropriately. Then, as I was sitting in the pew, listening to my principal (or former principal) ramble on for over ten minutes, I began to feel very similar to the protagonist of the movie, The Graduate (coincidentally, one of my favorite movies). I instantly changed my mind and decided to write tonight's post about the movie, The Graduate, and feature some music that is either from the movie, or goes along with it.

The Graduate Trailer (1967)

From Wikipedia:

"The Graduate
is a 1967 comedy/drama/romance directed by Mike Nichols, based on the novel of the same name by Charles Webb, who wrote the piece shortly after graduating from Williams College. The screenplay is by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry, who makes a cameo appearance as the hotel clerk. The film tells the story of Ben Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman), a recent college graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) and then falls in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross)."

Now, the entire soundtrack was Simon & Garfunkel, so I'll post one of the more prominent tracks in the movie.

Sound Of Silence [Live] - Simon & Garfunkel

Workin' on my handshake and my smile.

Hello everyone, and welcome to another calm Sunday night, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. If you haven't yet figured it out, this is Norman writing again, after my oh-so mysterious two day absence (By the way, I'd like to thank Joseph for covering for me). Now, this post is going to have nothing to do with my absence, but instead, another important, or not so important (depending how you look at it), event in my life. This event will be taking place tomorrow evening, while most of you Windsor-ites will be attending the massive fireworks celebration. Tomorrow, I am graduating, and FINALLY moving on to highschool.

So, I thought a good theme for today's post would be graduation, change and moving on (I promise you won't find Vitamin C on this list). So, without further ado, enjoy today's mixtape.

I sincerely miss those heave metal bands

Good evening my friends, and welcome to another still Thursday, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Tonight is going to be another installment of the Band of the Week post. So, if you've been having a bad/average week, allow this next band to make your week THAT much better. So, without further ado, the Band of the Week.

The Band of the Week; Wilco

This week's Band of the Week is Wilco. Wilco is an American rock band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1993. They formed after the members former band (Uncle Tupelo) lost their vocalist. Although they've gone through some massive line-up changes, their current line-up is Jeff Tweedy (Vocals and Guitar), John Stirratt (Bassist), Nels Cline (Guitarist), Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen (Multi- Instrumentalists); and Glenn Kotche (Drums). They are one of my favorite artists, and if you look all the way back to our first Album of the Week post, you'll see that Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (alongside Neutral Milk Hotel) are my two favorite albums.

Here's an interesting time line of Wilco band members;

Good evening world (or, the 9 people who probably might read this on a daily basis - thank you!), and welcome to another graceful Monday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Today's post is going to be the opposite of extravagant because, I'll say this quite frankly, I'm saving all my extravagance for tomorrow's post. For those of you who don't know, today's post is this blogs 99th post, and I believe that everyone knows what number comes after 99. That's right, tomorrow, I'll we'll be celebrating this blogs 100th post, and what a 100th it shall be. It will feature contributions by Stuart, Joseph, two special surprise contributors, and obviously, myself. So, I'll post three tracks to hold you over until tomorrow.

In case you're wondering, these two songs are from a mixtape that my friend (I'd even venture into the best friend category) made me two years ago. Yes, she's still just as awesome.

This song is strictly for my cousin Joseph. Nobody else in their right mind actually likes this band.

For awhile I heard you, missing steps in the street.

Hello everyone, and welcome to another dark, ridiculously mosquito-infested Saturday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Before I get on with the Album of the Week post, I'd first and foremost like to formally apologize for the post yesterday. I hope you can understand, it just wasn't my night. Alright, secondly, I'd just like to remind everyone that the incredibly important 100th post is coming up (Monday or Tuesday, I believe), so brace yourself for that. Alright, now, I'll give you a moment to prepare yourself, for the Album of the Week.

Album of the Week; Duets 2

Frank Sinatra (born Francis Albert Sinatra) was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on December 12th, 1915. You may know him by his many other names, such as Chairman of the Board or Ol' Blue Eyes, but whatever you call him, the undeniable fact is that Mr.Sinatra is one of the most talented and well respected voices of the 20th century.

Our Album of the Week, Duets 2, was actually recorded in 1994, LONG past the pinnacle of Mr.Sinatra's career. It is the follow up to his 1993 record, Duets, which was his first taste of commercial success in almost thirty five years. This record, although generally less well-received than Duets, it still managed to reach #9 on the Billboards music charts.

So, enjoy the rest of your evening with the king of swing, Mr. Frank Sinatra.

How many others have you drowned?

Hello everyone, and welcome to another still Thursday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Tonight has been very pleasant for me, and coupled with this feeling of pleasantness, I'm also feeling some extreme exhaustion. So, because of this, the post tonight is going to extremely short, but incredibly sweet. So prepare your tiny mind for the earth shattering awesomeness, the colossally magnificent, Band of the Week.

The Band of the Week ; Atlas Sound

Atlas Sound is Bradford James Cox solo project. In case you don't know who Mr.Cox is, here's a little background information. Bradford James Cox, the lead singer of Deerhunter, was born in Athens, Georgia in 1982. He is openly gay, and claims to be a virgin (which is cool with this blog). Another interesting fact about Mr.Cox is that he surfers from Marfan Syndrome. If you don't know what Marfan Syndrome is, I sure as hell didn't, you can read up on it right here.

Atlas Sound released their first full LP this year, entitled Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel. It is very good, and I can guarantee it will end up on my end of the year list.

She left me roses by the stairs

Hello, and welcome, one and all, to another beautiful Wednesday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Today's post is going to be a of a trip back to the nineties, the decade of my birth (and childhood). I became pretty fascinated with a certain band today after my entire group (I go to elementary school, we sit in groups!) was singing the chorus of "All The Small Things". Well, I definitely just gave the band away, but if you're not smart enough to have figured it out, the post today will concern the band Blink 182. So, enjoy.

Blink 182 is (was) an American "pop punk" band from Poway, California, formed in 1992. They have, since then, released 5 studio albums, 4 demos, 1 EP, and 1 live album. Oh, yeah, and did I mention they were a staple of my childhood? Well, they definitely were.

Anyways, here's a couple Blink 182 tracks for your listening pleasure. Don't feel guilty for liking them, I sure as hell don't!

Tha Carter III

Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another edition of Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Today is proving itself to be a VERY exciting Tuesday, and as the night progresses, it seems to be getting much better. For those of you who don't know (get the hell off of my blog), Lil Wayne's new album, Tha Carter III, was FINALLY released today. Yes, I was at Dr.Disc directly after school spending my hard earned money to buy this album. Well, I think I built the hype up quite enough, and now, if I may, an official Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice Record Review seems to be in order.

An Official Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice Record Review;
Tha Carter III

Before I first sat down to listen to this album, my hand were shaking. The reason I was so anxious about this is, quite frankly, I didn't think that anything could top Da Drought 3. I release now that this is not what Dwayne Carter (Lil Wayne, respectively) set out to do. Tha Carter III is an equally amazing, yet completely different album. So, with that in mind, I proceeded to carefully slide the album into my CD player. The following 18 songs were complete and utter bliss.

3 Peat serves as a great opener, with Lil Wayne rapping about... well, basically shooting your grandmother and being the greatest. Then, the epic (I hate that word) Mr.Carter starts, which sets a completely different mood, featuring a sweet sped up sample, and Jay-Z (that's always a good way to get points with me). After all this, I still don't mind the T-Pain contribution, even though he bugs the living shit out of me.

The rest of the album is equally great, with maybe just one low point (A Mili), but I was able to get past that, so you should as well! Well, here's a track from the album, even though I HIGHLY suggest that you go to your local record store and purchase it yourself. I mean it this time.

Hey, Mr.Carter, Tell Me Where You Been

Hello everyone, and welcome to another brutally hot Sunday evening here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. I'm sitting here, marvelling at the fact that I've been wishing for this time of year to come since... well, since it ended. Now, though, I'm beginning to doubt my own desires. I'm finding myself becoming altogether annoyed with the weather, the fact I have to keep putting my guitar back in the case, on account of the humidity, and I'm tired of smelling like a pig from all the sweat which is constantly dripping down EVERY part of my body. You know what? I'm not in the mood for happy, poppy, summer music. There is no type of music called summer music, so please reframe from mentioning it! No, this is not just an annoying rant (is there any other kind?), this rant actually has a purpose. For today's post, I'm going to share a small mix of songs that have to do with the season I now find myself longing for. See if you can guess which season it is.

We call upon the author to explain

Hello everyone, and welcome to another warm Saturday afternoon, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Today, we'll be revisiting the Album of the Week post, and we'll actually have TWO Albums of the Week, a la the very first Album of the Week post. So, prepare yourself to be mentally stretched and completely mind-fucked by the sheer awesomeness of ... The Albums of the Week.

Album of the Week #1 : Drunken Lullabies by Flogging Molly

Flogging Molly is a seven piece Irish American Celtic Punk (and so much more) band, hailing from Los Angeles, who've been together since 1997. They released their second album, Drunken Lullabies in 2002, on their current label, SideOneDummy records. So, here's two tracks from that fabulous album.

What's Left of the Flag - Flogging Molly

Rebels of the Sacred Heart - Flogging Molly

Album of the Week #2 : The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis

Nick Cave, whether he's with his band, The Bad Seeds, going solo, or paired up with Warren Ellis, the man is a musical god. In this case, it is the latter, with whom he composed the soundtrack to the movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The soundtrack is brilliant, not surprisingly, and features some of the best instrumental songs I have ever laid ... ears on. So, enjoy a couple tracks from this soundtrack.

And don't compose epic poems to win her back

Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. I've had a very long night (which is a good thing, in this case), so I'm going to make the Song of the Day post very quick.

Song of the Day; On A Freezing Chicago Street

First of all, here is a little bit of information about the band. Margot & the Nuclear So So's are a band from Indianapolis, Indiana, who formed in 2005. As some of you may have guessed upon reading the band name, Margot comes from the character Margot (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) in the movie The Royal Tenenbaums.

Our Song of the Day is called "On A Freezing Chicago Street" and it is off of their debut album, The Dust Of Retreat, which came out 2005 and was rereleased in 2006. So, enjoy the track.

On A Freezing Chicago Street (Live) - Margot & The Nuclear So So's

Alright, so on a completely different note, I just noticed that in less than 2 weeks, we'll be celebrating our 100th post. I want to do something pretty extravagant , which includes all three contributors to the blog, but I need some ideas. So, if you have a good idea, feel free to leave a comment.

The teachers who taught me weren't cool

Hello everyone, and welcome to another incredibly HOT Thursday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. It is currently 30 degrees out right now (or approximately 88 degrees Fahrenheit, for all you Americans) and I can honestly say that my skin is basically boiling and my eyeballs resemble poached eggs. Yeah, I think that's a pretty good comparison. Alright, well, tonight's post is going to be another one of those short summer posts. The reason these posts are getting shorter, but hopefully not declining in quality, is that the summer is really starting to set in, and with the hectic activities that surround the end of the school year, and I can barely muster the energy to sit down and write a decent sized post. So, for the next little while, please bear with me, as the music will be just as fantastic as it always is. Anyways, let's get into it.

Band of the Week: Fionn Regan

As you can see, the Band of the Week is Fionn Regan. A bit of information about Mr.Regan? Sure! Fionn Regan is a poet, artist and singer/songwriter from Bray, Ireland. He recently (July 2007) released his debut album, The End Of History, in America. Apart from this album, Mr.Regan has only released three EP's, so he is a relative newcomer on the music scene. His music is generally acoustic, and mostly focuses on Fionn's masterful finger-picking, beautiful lyrics, and wonderful voice, which reminds me of a young Neil Young.

So, enjoy a couple tracks from Fionn Regan's debut album, The End Of History, and a live cover.

The Underwood Typewriter - Fionn Regan

So, that basically concludes tonight's post. To take care of the music portion, I'm basically going to post two unrelated (except the fact that they both are solid pieces of music) songs.

And Ev'ry Stop Is Neatly Planned, For A Poet And A One-man Band.

Well, good evening everyone and welcome to the ushering in of a new era of Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. As you know, Norman is the usual blogger here, but today that has changed. Today, Norman has asked me to do the post. So, my name is Stuart (A.K.A Stu-bear) and I go to school with Norman; I think that's all the information you need to know. I hope I will fulfill your musical cravings just as Norman has done for the past months. Anyways, let's get on with the music, shall we?

Today, we will be listening to Simon and Garfunkel. Simon and Garfunkel met up with eachother back in the sixth grade, and were very close friends. In their juniour year of high school they began performing together, starting out in school plays and working themselves up. They recorded their first song, which was "Hey, Schoolgirl", and released it in 1957. This single sold over 100,000 copies, hitting #49 on the billboards. Enough with all this history, it's after school, isn't it? Here are some tracks from one of their greatest hits albums, I hope you enjoy the songs as much as I do.

Floccinaucinihilipilification

Hello everyone, and welcome to another warm, beautiful Monday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. Tonight's post is going to be one of those short ones, because, quite frankly, I should be asleep right now (according to my mother and father, I don't get enough rest). I'm also writing this very post on a sketchy laptop, in the dark, who absolutely no idea of what I'm writing about. Anyways, I guess I'll go searching through my sister's iTunes and perhaps something will come up.

Alright, now, I realize that I possess many cacoethes, and one of them is reposting music. I promise to try my hardest not to do that tonight. Now, the artist/soundtrack that has caught. my eye tonight is the John Lennon "Imagine" soundtrack. For those of you who haven't heard it, it really is a very good soundtrack (what did you expect?), for a movie which was a bit of a disappointment (again, did you expect anything different?). So, here's a couple tracks from the album, I hope you enjoy.

It was 41 years ago today, that Sgt Pepper taught the band to play

Hello everyone, and welcome to an absolutely glorious Sunday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. The reason that this Sunday is so very glorious, is because (as this post title stated), 41 years ago today, a VERY influential album was released. I refuse to go as far as many major publications (*cough*Rolling Stone*cough*) and call it the MOST influential album of all time. Yet, it is impossible to deny the greatness of this album. Released on June 1st, 1967 in Britain (a day later in America), this album sports one of the most interesting album covers of all time. For those of you who haven't seen it (newborns, and those who are blind), the photo is of the Beatles, dressed to the nines in Sgt Pepper attire, surrounded by their "friends". These "friends" include famous film stars, philosophers, great minds, and basically just influential figures (living and dead). It also played a very prominent role in spurring on those very devoted advocates of the Paul Is Dead rumors.

Now, for the music. The songs on the Sgt Pepper album were all very innovative and unique in their own ways. The concept of an imaginary band, essentially Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, was ditched after the first two songs (only reappearing near at the very end, in the form of a reprise), yet each song on the album stays strong. The Beatles became one of the first bands to experiment with backwards technology, unique recording techniques and manipulating orchestral sounds in their songs. The songs on this album, like almost every other Beatles album, were very distinctly either Paul's or John's.

Anyways, here are a couple tracks to accompany your ears on these last two remaining hours of Sgt. Pepper Day. I hope you enjoy.
