Bonjour mon amies! Welcome to very first post of the official Holy Fucking Nostalgia Series. On this very fine Monday evening we will be taking a trip through the terrace of time to see what it is that makes nostalgia so appealing. This very tedious secret will be revealed each week in short installments that will reveal the superb music of various decades. This week we will be taking a look at 1960 - 1970, as well as another little surprise (which isn't a surprise at all, seeing as you can just scroll down the page and view it immediately). Enjoy!

1960:

August 1 - The Beatles make their debut in Hamburg, Germany. The band at the time included John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe on bass and Pete Best on drums.

1961:

December 8 - Beach Boys release their debut 45rpm single: Surfin'/Luau on the small California label Candix Records.

October 19 - Simon and Garfunkel release Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., which is initially a total flop upon first release. After release of their second album, Sounds of Silence, in 1966, it hits #30 on the Billboard charts.
December 11 - Sam Cooke is killed under mysterious circumstances in Los Angeles, California. Shortly thereafter, "A Change Is Gonna Come," a song considered by many to be his best, is released. MC5 forms. The Who's musical career begins.

1965:

March 6 - The Temptations has their first hit, "My Girl", written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, from Motown records.
March 18 - Rolling Stones Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Bill Wyman are fined five pounds for urinating on the wall of a London gas station. The band had asked to use the restroom, but it was out of order.
June 12- The Beatles are appointed Members of the British Empire (MBE) by the Queen. Since it was unusual for rock stars to be appointed as MBEs, a number of previous recipients complained and protested.
July 25 - Bob Dylan plays Newport Folk Festival, is booed for playing electric set with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Joan Baez and Donovan also play sets.

1966:

March 4 - The Beatles' John Lennon is quoted in the London newspaper, The Evening Standard as saying that the band was now more popular than Jesus. In August, following publication of this remark in Datebook, there are Beatles protests and record burnings in the Southern US's "Bible Belt".
July 29 - Bob Dylan is involved in a motorcycle accident. July - In this month, The Mothers of Invention release their debut album, Freak Out!, a pioneer concept album.
August 29 - The Beatles perform their last official concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California

January 4 – The Doors release their début album of the same name. Jefferson Airplane's influential album Surrealistic Pillow is released.

January 30 - The Beatles perform for the last time in public, on the roof of the Apple building at 3 Savile Row, London. The performance, which was filmed for the Let It Be movie, is stopped early by police after neighbors complain about the noise.
March 20 - John Lennon marries Yoko Ono in Gibraltar.
July 3 - Brian Jones is found dead in the swimming pool at his home in Sussex, England almost a month after leaving The Rolling Stones.
October - Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band release Trout Mask Replica.
David Bowie's musical career begins with the single "Space Oddity", the unofficial anthem for the moon landing in July of this year

Good morning to everyone who is currently reading Looks Like Coffee Tastes Like Juices (Unless your in different times zones). Prior to Norman temporary leaving for Quebec I was asked to look after the blog for the week and I will be posting another entry hopefully tomorrow. If some of you readers and commenter alike don’t remember me or never had the chance to forget me I am Norman’s not so long lost cousin who happens to be called Joseph.

I made a few posts when the blog was still new this was before Norman’s high school shenanigans but then I accidentally fell through a portal to another dimension full of strange creatures and hidden secrets which lead me to become inactive for several months. I greatly apologize for my inactivity but enough with phony half true excuses I promise that I will contribute more towards your blog. I am although extremely happy to say that this blog has grew in everything imaginable from the people viewing from the contents you can find in it, thank you very much for posting in the blog and continuing to make it active. Thank you, m̀gòi, grazie, dĕkuji, danke, dōmo arigatō et finalement merci beaucoup pour ton aide.

Andrew Bird, My Heart Belongs To You

If you're a human being, or a reader of this blog (hopefully, you're both), then you are completely aware of my ... obsession, of sorts, with a mister Andrew Bird. It all started when, let's see, The Mysterious Production of Eggs came out, in whatever year it came out. After hearing the opening lines of Sovay, I knew it was love at first listen.

So, it is time again for Andrew, or Mr.Bird as I'd prefer to call him, to release a new album after the success of last year's fantastic Armchair Apocrypha. Anyways, the new album will be called Noble Beast, and it'll drop January 27th (coincidentally, this is also the date I will be at Dr.Disc purchasing it). From what I've heard of this album, a good portion, I may add, it is pretty spectacular. 

I'll leave you, the dedicated reader, with a track from the new album, entitled "Oh No". Also, if you're wondering whether Mr.Andrew "Whistlin'" Bird delivered the goods on the whistling front on this song ... well, we'll just say he did. Take a listen and see what you think.

Hello everyone, and good evening. Tonight is Sunday night, usually a relaxing and somewhat melancholy night, seeing as tomorrow is the day when most people have to get back to school/work. Not tonight, my friends, not tonight. I thought that this Sunday might be a usual Sunday, one which I would spend sitting at home. This was not the case though, and let me tell you why:

Tonight, Nicholas and I watched the movie "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay", or as the mock President Bush so fondly put it, G-Bay. My brother Jon argues that this movie wasn't as good as the first Harold & Kumar because it wasn't as "relatable". Well, so what, I say! I didn't watch the movie to relate to it, and I certainly don't judge movies on their how relatable they are. So, Jon, shut up! This movie was hilarious! 

 

Honestly though, dramatic introduction aside, I highly suggest that you watch this movie, if you'd like to get away with not thinking for an hour an forty-one minutes.

Well, that was my impromptu movie review and I hope you enjoyed it. Yes, I do realize that it told you nothing about the movie, but what can you do? Anyways, I'm very tired and I'd like to get to bed now, so for the music portion of this post, here's the song that I'll be falling asleep to tonight.

The Argument

I've been in this argument many times before and my position has always been a neutral one. I don't particularly think that either band is the greatest in the world because I don't believe that there is a greatest band in the world. Sure, there are many great bands, but I'd never strand myself on a desert island with just one album. Well, maybe In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. The point is, I don't think that you can classify one band as the greatest because there are so many different styles, genres and eras that influence bands to make them great. Now, I'd like to know what you guys think. Which one of these bands is the greatest, or even just better than other? Let me know in the comment box.

Hello again!
Today's post is going to be rather short, as I'm strapped for time.

The first song I'm going to post today will be the song Mykel & Carli. It's a song written for the creators of the Weezer fan club, Mykel and Carli Allan. Unfortunately, they died four years after the song was written, in a car crash with their sister. The irony is in the fact that they were driving back from a Weezer concert. I found this b-side on the Deluxe Edition of the Blue Album, which just happens to be my favorite album.

I really enjoyed this Big Star song when I first heard it, some two years ago. For some reason, I had the idea in my head that Elliott Smith could do an awesome cover of this song, if it weren't for his death. Then, a year later, I stumbled across this version by accident and found it ludicrously hilarious. I know, it's not that funny. It's a good cover, none the less.

My sister received a Who's Greatest Hits for Christmas last year (coincidentally, I gave it to her) and has been in love with the Who ever since. I had sort of forgotten about this track, as it has been a while since I've heard Tommy, and when she purchased the album, I fell in love with it all over again. It's short and sweet and reminds me why I love Pete Townshend.
