Nobody likes to be told what to do. Nobody likes to admit that they need some lowly conductor to pull the lever which will switch em' to the other side of the tracks. Well, that's not entirely true, but the Sadism and Bondage communities aside, it rings true in some way or another. Well, I'm going to disregard the primal human paradox and tell you exactly what to do this morning: MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE NEW YORK TIMES WEBSITE, DRINK SOME COFFEE (or some apple juice in a coffee mug!), AND STREAM THE NEW NATIONAL ALBUM!

This is an album which you can feel yourself listening to on your kitchen table, the sort of white linoleum that is perched in the corner of your kitchen, next to a window with heavy wooden blinds. This is a dollies and cardigans album, that resonates in places that are a little unexpected.

I'm going to get one thing cleared up initially; this album is not Boxer, and it's not Alligator. This album, High Violet, is full of more elephant shit than a circus, I promise you that. It's isolated the same as Boxer, but you see, the music is busier. More preoccupied, more textured, more layered. The music clashes beautifully with the vocals, the limitless vocals that remain in between two keys.

The album speaks for itself.

There is a band of revelrous young men, spreading cheer and ambience and wide-eyed wild wishing, like farmers spread seed to make dwindling crops grow. In this case, the farmers are grown men who harbour a fascination with strawberry jam, and have opted out of using the names their tentatively caucasian, middle-aged mothers game them, instead preferring the heartwarming titles of Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and Geologist. This collection of revelrous creatures? Animal Collective.

Hailing from their Baltimore, Maryland home of ... well, Baltimore, Maryland, these four young men need not be introduced. If pieces of art that are titled Strawberry Jam, Merriweather Post Pavilion and Feels don't ring a bell for you, you need a new fucking bell. Animal Collective have been wildly and rightfully successful in 2009, releasing their most-acclaimed record to date. An Animal Collective fan, also known as someone difficult to find in a room filled with cardigans, knows one thing about this band, if they know anything. After every gracious album these men release, an EP must follow, still orbiting the themes and the sounds of the album that spawned it. The interesting trait of these almost expected EPs is that each one is equally reverent and independent as any album the band has produced. Fall Be Kind is no exception.

Fall Be Kind, the title of their new EP, and if fall was kind to them (ambient sunshine pop on the Billboard 100? That's beyond kind. That's life desiring to perform some blatantly sexual acts on them...), winter is looking just as hospitable. Beach Boy-esque rhythms, Richard Hell and the Voidoids exhilaration, and (this is the part where I stop comparing them to other people!) the exacerbated joy of pop that Animal Collective is known for bestowing are heavily 'stowed. There isn't much one can say of this EP besides, entertain a pair of shorts beneath your snow pants this winter, and a pair of headphones to circumnavigate your head, and you'll be just fine.

Fall was kind, who's to say winter won't be?

Good morning, sovereign nation! It is currently 11:18 A.M, which is approximately the time that a young man should be creating puddles of drool in the middle of his math textbook, paying his unfounded dues to the faceless monster that is the hierarchy of education! The Flaming Lips have been very persistent in the battle to win over my listener-ship! All their efforts are fruitless though, because I have been an obsessive-to-the-point-of-alarming fan since the first ten seconds of "With You" on their first album, Hear It Is. Relentless in their awe-inspiring disregard for knowing how to technically play instruments well, the Flaming Lips are kicking the shit out of my ear canals today! This song is off of their 1995 masterpiece, Clouds Taste Metallic.

Lately - BOAT

There are certain instances when the hair of a fifteen year old boy, which may be one of the least delicate things in the universe, next to the hands of an experienced miner, can be completely misshapen by a pair of monumental headphones. This sacrifice of hair-form is completely acceptable when it's caused by four chords, and a song that screams for good times in the verse, and saves the bad times for the bridge.

BOAT have just recently released their new LP, entitled Setting the Paces! I'll give you a little a piece of advice: go find it. Whatever environmental shit you need to muddle through, find this record. It's worth it.

Upon waking up, some living people's (I chose to use the adjective living for the sole reason that zombies do not sleep) thoughts are a consortium of ideas and desires. The common man, i.e the North American (wo)man, will often ponder a few things before rubbing the strange yellowish matter that has accumulated around their eyes. The state of the economy, the affairs of the president, Oprah's bookclub and what's left in the fridge for breakfast are usually predominant in regards to these thoughts. Although, in the dark crevasses and cluttered bedrooms of our great continent , there remains a thriving minority! This group of startling attractive men and women have little concern for Oprah, the economy, or the president, instead being primarily concerned with the following: when Pavement is getting back together, how long until the next Sonic Youth album, and the relationship status of Ben Gibbard. This association of people, known the world over as hipsters, are all aware of one piece of information. In the world of popular music, there are only two categories of song.

You may be arguing (in which case, you should probably stop yelling at your electronics) with me at this moment, spewing out various genres and subgenres, protesting and proclaiming the individuality of certain pieces of music. Black Gypsy Metal, Scottish Indie Pop, West Coast Low-Fi Noise Rock; looking beyond the facade of these genres, it becomes clear to anyone besides the casual listener. In conclusion, all popular song can be lumped into two categories: songs about New York, and songs about California!

Those of you who do not agree with everything you're told (I'm hoping this blog is commie-free, but hey, shit happens) , should now start your enraged ranting. How can I be so full of typical western narcissism, that asshole-esque spirit of manifest destiny, that I dare suggest that all popular songs are primarily about two American cities? Well, my dear reader, I dare that because it's completely true. In this post, we'll be audibly investigating examples of songs that fit into the "songs about New York" category, while the next post will deal with the "songs about California" category, and the final post in this trifecta of awesome will deal with those tender songs that fit in the middle of this Venn Diagram of Song. Music related news falls into seasonal trends almost as consistently as sports. During the summertime, news of festival performers, reunion tours, and pop-hook driven, hand-clap laden albums floods the Internet headquarters (otherwise known as your computer). As leaves begin to shade themselves like a paint-by-numbers, evergreen trees remain the same colour, and college-bound douche-bags whip out their acoustic guitars, we tend to get wordof folk-inspired Americana, of Dylan Thomas sweaters and ruffled hair, coupled with some minor chords and an amateur harmonica player. Besides those that continually break this seasonal mould, who may be just as monotonous as those who don't, we generally know what to expect of the blogosphere each season, and therefore, we have started to draw unnecessary comparisons between what an album/song sounds like, and the time of it's release. There is, thankfully, a time between. As I suffer from an obsession with all things delicately placed between A & B (I'd like to think of them as infinity!), it seems that many of my favourite artists do as well. So, while the music world takes it's much needed, but never heeded. break from the cavalcade of early September releases, andthe hectic releases that occur between Octoberand early December, those of us who aren't held by the great metaphysical cinder block that is high school (or who just don't do their homework) rejoice! Like hibernating bears, or just really strategic fat kids, we have hoarded our music like food. Alas! The time has come for us to lift up our fictitious paws/the loose floorboard near the closet and reveal the berries/Snicker's bars that we've been caressing all summer long. Enjoy yourselves!

In the depths of a foreign exotic land (known to the locals as Staten Island, New York), a group of brave and thoughtful young men decided to do what brave and thoughtful young men (usually with the accompaniment of a cute Asian keyboardist) do best: start a band. And start they did! The brain child of guitarist/voxman Joseph "Ferocious" D'Agostino and drummer Matthew Miller is called Cymbals Eat Guitars. I'm almost positive that I've ranted and raved about these men on the internet, but after finally hearing their self released debut, Why There Are Mountains, they have cemented themselves with superglue into my best new artists of the year list. Honed chops definitely peak through on this near-perfect album, mixing beautifully distorted guitar riffs with the most... fun? screaming verse that I have ever heard. Listen below!

After completely detaching yourself from this newly dubbed "mainstream" piece of pop perfection, as well as rushing to purchase the new Jens Lekman album, you never did bother to learn whose charming, slightly lisp-afflicted, female voice that was singing on that song, did you? The name of this delightful young songstress is Victoria Bergsman (under the guise Taken By Trees), former lead singer of The Concretes. Once upon a very recent time ago, one of my dearest objects of affection, usually referred to as The Black Lips, were almost imprisoned in a foreign country. The Black Lips, who describe themselves as "flower-punk" and whom I describe as "fucking-rad", formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000, when good things were still originating in Atlanta, Georgia. The band is a mixture of all things sacred, including blues, doowop, punk, and gospel, and are primarily known for their onstage antics, which can be a tad... illustrious? Anyway, one of these stage antics includes members of the all-male band (not like NSYNC, if that's what you're thinking) kissing (a little more like NSYNC). Apparently, this is not how shit "goes down" in India. During a tour in early 2009, the band was met with rampant hate-crime and subsequently thrown out of India for "homosexual acts". These convictions resulted in the band cooling down in Berlin. Enter King Khan & The BBQ Show, the ridiculously awe inspiring Canadian duo (who reside in Germany) who had the genius idea of forming a SUPERgroup and recording an impromptu album with The (now fugitive) Black Lips.

Back in present time, the fruits of these (many) loins have come to... fruition! Armed with an almighty band name, The Almighty Defenders are defending a decade when it was acceptable to "go steady" and the dashing young president had not been assassinated yet (sounds a little like our own decade, no?). And here, for your listening pleasure, is the track...

The heat has descended. In no way am I referring to the gradual rise in temperature, where watered down beers are broken out of recently purchased coolers, and those can afford to be without shirts will go without. No, what I'm referring to is a literal blitzkrieg attack of hair-raping humidity and inhumane temperatures. My dear friends, August is upon us, and with that, you have little chance of surviving without hearing the sickening (but oddly pleasing?) sounds of LFO's "Summergirls".... until today. As you all know, the Phog Lounge in Downtown Windsor hosted the first ever Phog Phest to commemorate it's acceptance of the title "best live music venue in all of Canada." I was lucky enough to be one of the many (strange.. or colourful) people in attendance at this event.

I had intended to write this post eons earlier, but I seem to have some sort of really weird cold (SWINE FLU!??) that has lasted since the day before the spectacle until this very day. So, please excuse my lateness and overall incoherence. I’d like to blame any mistakes on my cold and not my general laziness, so you are all just going to have to go with it, damnit!

By the way, if you can’t tell who I am by the former paragraphs, that means that you don’t already know me. Hello, my name is Kaitlyn, and I’d like to apologize for the wait, but I can’t churn out posts at the speed of our regular blogger, my Ny-Quil addicted, insomniac SUPERBESTfriend.

The Phog Phest was a pretty big day for me. Being from Amherstburg (insert farm jokes here) I had never been to a concert (Does Elmo Live count?). I know. It’s pretty sad. But, since I have (a) wonderful friend(s) who have decided to educate me (if forcibly) about life outside the farm, I found myself in a car on the way to Downtown Windsor listening to incredibly chiseled two man-boys screaming out Weezer’s El Scorcho.

Since I’m a masochist and enjoy giving people fodder to make fun of me with, I’ll tell you all something about myself- I’m terrified of cities. Traffic, people if Downtown Windsor has it, I’m afraid of it (except a surplus of gays and lesbians- not scared of them). So, it was an adventure in itself getting there (I flinched every time we had to cross a street.)

But it was all worth it once we arrived at the makeshift stage and were greeted by Ron Leary’s sideburns and the sounds of acoustic guitar resting upon the shoulders of a HA-monica player by the name of “Mr. Chill”, though by the time we got there, the set was almost done.

Next up was The Square Root of Margaret, out of Chatham.

After that, the ‘Phest was moved to inside the Phog Lounge, where we are not allowed, being too young to drink. So I got to explore Downtown Windsor, something which I have never done before (…so many cars). We had a lunch/dinner/midday type meal at the Black Kettle Bistro, a little café style restaurant on some street somewhere near the Phog (I have NO sense of direction, for the record) which served the best thin crust pizza I have ever had.

One of my favourite bands to play that day was Green Go from Guelph, Ontario. Not only did I like their sound (sort of techno, with lots of synth) they had a FEMALE SYNTH PLAYER, a really cool one. She wasn’t just there to look pretty, like some talentless pop group/brothels (or ULTRA-massage parlours..). She not only played the synth, she also sang! Damn… she was cool.

The second-to-last band I saw that night was The Arkells, who were probably my favourite. I’m not sure what you’d describe them as. Heavy enough to be rock, but they also had a harmonica… just listen…

There’s really no way to describe them if you haven’t heard it. It’s all instrumental, and mostly synthesizers. Basically they have five guys on five synths in a circle and they just go crazy. It’s like the soundtrack to a seizure, or a frat party.

Unfortunately, that was the last set I was able to see, as I had to make the journey back to my little town.

So ends the much-delayed first post.

One week ago today, the sleepy town of Windsor, Ontario (this is beginning to sound like Sleepy Hollow...), known for it's illustrious "massage" parlors and noxious garbage scent, hosted one of the most exhilarating live music events this city has ever seen. This event, aptly titled Phog Phest, was a celebration of the Phog Lounge. For those of you who are unaware of the Phog Lounge's existence, I hear Rona has a wonderful sale on horse manure that you should promptly drown yourself and loved ones in. Yeah, it's that good. Well, to begin this post, I suppose a brief history of Windsor's finest establishment is in order. Forward, Russia!

This, my dear friends, is the Phog Lounge. The marvel red shack, while often ignored by the common man, is the home of Tom Lucier and Frank (Just Frank). Tom and Frank, the warriors of manliness that this city tends to attract, have been operating the Phog Lounge for over five full years, bringing the best in independent music and barbershop quartet to the Rose City. Now, on to the reason for this timely post-a-rama?

CBC Radio 3, fronted by the gallant Grant Lawrence, sent it's promiscuous Searchlight on a quest for the Best Live Music Venue in Canada. Hundreds of venues, and many suspenseful weeks, later (all with a larger capacity/venue size), The Phog Lounge eventually emerged victorious. Fulfilling it's lucrative promise, CBC Radio 3 hosted a live broadcast and massive outdoor festival, dubbed Phog Phest, in front of the Phog Lounge. Headlining this extravagant affair was the best live band in this humble writer's opinion, Holy Fuck (a la Toronto). In the below section, I will include a cumulative mixtape, spanning most of the artists who performed, photos from heaven (also known as the prior mentioned event), and an incredibly brief synopsis of my adventures at the most anticipated musical event of the millennium. Try to contain your excitement. Emphasis on the "try".

To all those celebrating the bask-worthy sunlight, as well as the seemingly endless creative well that the uncut grass and vagrant trash has provided for our city: I salute you! To all those sitting inside (as I am at this very moment - hypocrisy abounds...): please go visit your national parks. This post, which will be invariably short in nature, is to inform you on the lovely topic that is Phog Phest. Read on!

A few months ago, CBC Radio 3 (Their Searchlight section, in particular) held a poll to discover an establishment worthy of the title, "The Best Live Music Venue In Canada". Thousands of entries heaped in, from B.C to Newfoundland, and by the end of the month only 10 entries remained. The most surprising of these entries was Windsor's own The Phog Lounge. Housing only a meager 75, compared to the some-odd-hundreds of the other entries, The Phog Lounge was the smallest venue on the list. The shocked lingered on after this minuscule establishment took home the gold, which included the promise of a national touring band playing a show at the victorious establishment.

One moment, the ice cream truck just drove by my house.

Anyway, Windsor is a city of extremes, I live here after all, from the minimal wages to the maximum number of strippers per square foot. Bearing this in mind, The Phog Lounge has decided to throw a festival where said group will play, along with almost 30 other bands, ranging from the local to the... not local. The corner of Victoria and University will be blocked off for this show. This free ($15 for the licensed), 13 hour festival will include the likes of Holy Fuck (our prized band), The Pack A.D, The Arkells and Chatam's own Square Root of Margaret. These are just four of the near 30 bands who will be performing through the evening.

On February 3rd, 1959, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P "The Big Bopper" Richardson were soaring high above civilization, bound for Fargo, North Dakota. Unfortunately, that cold and illustrious morning took a turn for the melancholy when said plane momentarily failed and fatefully crashed into the ground. Each of the three performers, along with the pilot, departed from the earth immediately upon crashing. Instantly, a trifecta of talent, and the most promising stars of the 1950's, lost their lives. Never before has the entertainment industry suffered such a loss in such a short span of time until this very week.

On June 25th, 2009, the legendary "girl-next-door" Farah Fawcett died of anal cancer at the age of 62. On June 28th, 2009, the effervescent (as were most of his products) television salesmen, William Darrell Mays, Jr, died of a concussion at the tender age of 50. Perhaps the most shocking of these deaths (and certainly the most publicized) is the death of Michael Jackson, on June 25th, 2009, at the age of 50.

I find it highly unlikely, as well as startlingly delicate, that any person above the age of six, save those who live in Amherstburg, or an Amish society, doesn't know who Michael Jackson was. As well as one of the most talented artists to have ever graced the planet, Michael Jackson's short-lived time on earth was shrouded in more publicity and controversy than the Iraq war. From his charges of child molestation (which he was later acquitted of), to his shocking pigmentation change, Michael Jackson has been perma-spotlighted since the age of 6. Instead of writing a lengthy post (which, with the help of Wikipedia and Google, would not at all be difficult to do), I've chosen to merely celebrate the music of a vastly talented man, and celebrate the breadth of his influence on popular culture and music.

I've never had a dream bigger than to be part of something like Thriller. We are kids when we hear those songs. we are lovers when we hear those songs. Michael brought the music out of the speakers and affixed it to the most important moments in our lives... all with love... all without cynicism. Nobody moved the needle like him ... Nobody moved the people like him. He will be missed ... and revered.

The first time I really payed attention to "Wanna be Startin' Somethin'" I was sitting in a car at Montgomery Mall in Rockville, MD with my stoner friends. What initially floored me was the heavily orchestrated vocal arrangements, which included chanting, response choir, heavy use of pitch shifting and backwards effects, and very little actual harmonies.
In the intro, Michael sings along with the bass and growls a "OOOOWWWSH" to start the song. He is fucking around, just playing, his delivery shifts from demonic to jokey in one bar. Total freedom. He sings as if nothing was on the line. The great Quincy Jones can not be underestimated here as a collaborator and producer (and like Tyson without Cus D'Amato, MJ was unmoored without Quincy.)
So these four suburbanites, stuck in pre-internet hell, sat transfixed in a parking lot for a 6 minute vamp, with its almost unchanging bass line and triumphant "Mama-se, mama-sa, mama-coo-sa" outro. We hadn't heard anything like it.
Rob Barber (High Places)
As a five year old, I completely drove my Mom crazy listening to a completely destroyed single of "Ease On Down The Road." It skipped terribly, needle jumped like crazy, and the weird army surplus record player with a built-in speaker (that I had stabbed holes into with safety scissors, I was a very stabby child...) made it sound more like Wolf Eyes being dissected by the Invisible Scratch Pickles. I remember putting it on over and over, and jumping on my bed in my underwear.
That record was a hand me down, but the first two records I bought with my paper route money was Thriller and Metal Heath by Quiet Riot. My Mom was waymore freaked out by the cover of Thriller for some reason and was really angry for me buying it. Which is odd, being that I still feel Metal Health is a really creepy and unnerving cover. Both "Thriller" and "Off The Wall" are perfect records, but I would have to say my standout tracks (depending on my mellow vs. boogie mood swings) are "Human Nature" and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)." As a side note, the night before he passed away, I was walking a few blocks from my new home here in LA, and my friend says, "oh hey, check it out, that is the house from the 'Thriller' video." I think I will go leave some flowers tomorrow morning.

01 Michael Jackson was my first musical purchase. I not only bought Thriller, I bought the poster. A person's first musical purchase is pretty important. Of course, it should be said that later accusations muddied the crystal clear waters of nostalgic memory for a time.
02 I couldn't watch the director's cut of the video. I had to run out of the room shivering in fear while my cruel family roared in mockery at my lily-livered cowardice.
03 According to Melanie, the combination of toasted after-eights and "Billie Jean" was, to her nine-year-old psyche, positively sophisticated: the aural and the taste work together to create a sense of velveteen "softness."

When I was a kid Michael Jackson was the shit. This was way before any of the child molestation charges. My cousin and I used to have the Moonwalker VHS tape. I remember the video where MJ is being chased by these two fat twins on mini motorcycles. I think it was claymation. That was my favorite video. I also remember the "Bad" video with the all the little kids battling Mike and his crew. I wished I could have been part of the "Bad" kid crew. So funny!!!

When I was a kid I was really into MJ and Madonna. I remember rushing out to buy the Michael Jackson shoes that came out from LA gear -- they didn't look anything like they did on the commercials, but I remember thinking I could moonwalk better with these bad boys. They are actually still a pretty cool looking shoe.
I always felt bad for MJ, G-D rest his soul.

The album Dangerous was huge when i was in grade six. MJ as an artist was new to me because my parents weren't massive fans and Thriller (the only album we owned) hadn't resonated. Keep in mind I was a tween and really into Supertramp.
When "Black Or White" had its music video premier I was thrilled to discover that Macaulay Culkin had a cameo. My confusion around wanting to be Macaulay Culkin so I could kiss Anna Chlumsky in the move My Girl meant that my eleven year old brain connected MJ to MC and i was a fan from that point on.
It's very surreal to know he has died.

Michael Jackson, for me, will always be a red jacket covered in zippers, sequined glove, and the moonwalk which I could never do. When Thriller was all the rage and every kid in the neighborhood wanted to be him. I actually took a class offered for free at a local park that promised I could learn the moonwalk. That I too could move like the King Of Pop. I must have backwards walked a thousand times to "Billie Jean," shuffling my toes, slide, heel up daydreaming how popular I would be when I showed up at school and casually busted the move out on the playground. I never even came close. I still can't figure it out. But every time "Billie Jean" comes on I'll be damned if I don't keep trying.
Michael Jackson's death is as tragic as it is surprising. I just wasn't ready for it. But Michael Jackson is not dead. He just left the body we all know he was so uncomfortable in and moved on to a place where he could be the perfect, happy person he always wanted to see in the mirror. He will forever live through his music and continue, as he did in life, to inspire countless creative people and set fire to countless dance floors. Long Live MJ, the world will miss you.
Alex Naidus (The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart)
I was talking to a friend today at lunch about MJ and was reminded of a bootleg I have from a few year's back that mashed up "Heal the World" with Lil' Jon's beat on The Bravehearts "Quick to Back Down." It's a pretty simple A+B mashup, but the effect is incredibly spooky and affecting. The production is really minimal, all minor key and bass-y, with these huge gong sounds and Michael is just doing his whisper cooing about how "there are people dying" and the whole thing is juuuuuust off-key enough to sound truly unhinged.
It sounds/feels extra spooky today and honestly made me feel a bit like a freak that this was my version of "commemorating." The same friend who I was reminiscing with at lunch sent over a pretty incredible video of Michael's Motown audition from 1968 -- possibly just to counterbalance the downer-vibe of the mashup, but regardless it's pretty wowing considering he was 10 at the time.

My Micheal Jackson memories start pretty young because I have an older brother who was the perfect age to get into MJ with all his friends. My parents wouldn't buy him "the jacket" but my mom took a similar one and sewed a bunch of zippers and stripes and shit on it for him and tried to make it look as much like the real thing. He rocked that all the time when I was little. I think my mom also may have made him a sequined glove but it might be a false memory being that I was pretty young.

I was super into Weird Al when I was little, and my favorite songs were his MJ parodies, "Eat It" and "Fat." In retrospect, I probably liked those the best because the actual songs were way better than whatever else he was parodying (with the exception of Madonna, of course).

It's sad when anyone dies young, but it's pretty sad that he never got a chance to redeem himself in the public's eyes. He definitely had a fucked up childhood and maybe suffered from some sort of mental illness. Pretty sad that people busted his balls so hard.

My friend Matthew would host the best slumber parties. His house was the closest thing our town had to an amusement park. Microwave, movie theatre-sized TV, MTV, punching bag, dirt bike, Boa constrictor, pinball machine, a treasure chest filled to the brim with weapons, and Jennifer.
His sister, Jennifer was not a mutant like us but nonetheless humored us. She got the Thriller VHS the day it came out. $80 later every girl from school was sleeping over. Animal-print clad underwear youth in corpse-like face paint doing synchronized dance routines, high on soda and all-you-can-eat pizza. Heaven. The boys and their binoculars, "Best night ever!"
Not even in that suburban Tomorrowland was there a state-of-the-art gadget to document such a moment. Detail was key. The ads in comic books lied, the magic shop-spy gear did not allow you to see-thru a girl's skin. So you really had to memorize every bump, curve, scrape, mark, hair, step, or breath said, if you were going to report back Monday morning in homeroom. Word got out. The gang least-likely to, had seen more of the girls than their preppie boyfriends had. Blood was to be shed at the all-night New Wave roller skate party. Like magic, theThriller video for one night had brought everyone together.
There were looks between Tammy and I. Giggles too. She was completely uncomfortable around me all week in school. It had to mean something. For reasons unknown I thought that even if she wasn't speaking to me in school, she totally would at Skate Wars. I was young, still figuring out the wardrobe but a statement had to be made if I was going to be seen at such "gay" event. The innocence of the past Friday was fading. Rapidly.
After-school special, punk make-over, cranked-up really high. War paint and spikes, posers beware! In true rebel spirit I stomped on over to Tammy, right across the rink with my sneakers on. A redneck Duran Duran devotee in a referee shirt blew a whistle at me. I felt so cool. Unfuckablewith. It was in my walk. Oozing my newfound confidence, seconds away from having a girlfriend. Getting closer. Tammy was laughing, a bit nervous in the eyes when I go back to the moment but in no way shape or form was her body language preparing me for what came next. A flying knuckle sandwich, packaged in a white, bedazzled Michael Jackson-signature glove. Her boyfriend laid me out!

Bonjour unionists, humanitarians, jugglers, circus folk, ice gypsies, rhinos, fascists, ect. ect., my name is Norman Nehmetallah, and I'm just realizing how pretentious one sounds when greeting others in a language that they themselves do not speak. This is Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice, as a quick glance to your address bar would've confirmed, and I haven't post in what seems like a millennium. Thankfully, it has not been a millennium though, and not much has passed us by in the music world which won't be covered in this very post. So, put a seat belt on, spank your child(ren) for good measure, and prepare yourself for the capitalist adventures which are(n't) about to unfold.

At the very top of this post is a band called Phoenix, who've not only been on a constant (this is not to be taken lightly) repeat on my stereo, but also on my iPod, computer, and headcomputer (known as a brain to the locals). Their new album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, is not only a piece of pure pop brilliance, but an infectiously simple record that I've yet to tire of. Being the restless soul I am, this is quite an accomplishment for the band.

In the very distant past, formerly known as a week ago, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists released a brand new demo which has proved to be quite promising material. Ted Leo & The Crew have always been favourite musical act of mine, but with the election of President Barack Obama, I've found myself pondering what Mr. Leo might be doing with his superb songwriting talents these days, since the "evil" Republicans and "nasty" bureaucrats, who have been the subject of many a Ted Leo record, have been overthrown. It seems that Mr. Leo has begun internalize his songwriting, and quite literally, as this new demo has The Pharmacists singing about Ted Leo's... brain?

This scathing 2 minute and 18 second blizzard of power chords and garbled talk is a very welcome change in today's intricate, although sometimes boring, mess of exaggeration that is not uncommonly found in music. Don't trust my opinion though, take a listen for yourself?

According to the fine young gentle(wo)men at Pitchfork Media,

"The Monsters of Folk supergroup-- which also features producer/Bright Eyes member Mike Mogis-- release their self-titled debut on September 22 via Shangri-La in North America, Rough Trade in Europe, Spunk in Australia, and P-Vine in Japan. A press release says so and everything.

According to the release, "all four members play every instrument on the album" and the music ranges from "road-worn" to "intimate" to "sun-soaked." The sometime tourmates recorded the LP in Malibu, California and Omaha, Nebraska over a two-year period between other projects. Track titles include "Whole Lotta Losin'" (Zeppelin tribute?), "Temazcal" (named after an ancient sauna), and "Losin Yo Head" ("Yo"!). The rest of the song names are below:

Well recently it’s been a good week for movie goers with Up and Drag Me To Hell coming this week but also the real news for everyone is the announcement of Toy Story 3 that and Ben Stiller is working on a new Zoolander movie!

"The former Wilco guitarist and Titanic Love Affair founding member passed away in his sleep Saturday night. Bennett was a key contributor to the first half of Wilco's discography, and his contentious relationship with frontman Jeff Tweedy was famously chronicled in the film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. A few weeks ago Bennett blogged that he was looking forward to completing another solo album Kicking At The Perfumed Air while recovering from an imminent hip replacement surgery, which he could no longer postpone despite being uninsured. Tweedy released this statement today: "We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him -- as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. Good afternoon my friends, and welcome to another lovely afternoon, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. I'm going to be incredibly frank today (as well as a little Norman); there are quite a bit of things that I harbor a deep and intricate hatred for. Headlining this vast list, followed immediately by venereal disease, is being limited to specific topics/pigeonholing myself. If anyone is catching these very subtle hints I'm trying to drop, what I'm basically saying is that restricting myself to THFNS posts was almost tumor-inducing for me. So, for the sake of my health, and the health of those in Windsor, Ontario (+ surrounding areas), I've decided to go on a hiatus from those THFNS posts, and continue with the regular spasmodic postings of ... whatever the fuck I feel like. So, without further hyperbole and ado; a return to form/lessness. Enjoy!

CAMERA OBSCURA'S My Maudlin Career (4AD Records)

When one first lays down Camera Obscura's My Maudlin Career, the crack of a snare drum whip and a handful of couplets, including "Spent a week in a dusty library/waiting for some words to jump at me", greet the listener. All Bob Dylan cliches involving snare drums aside, the song French Navy is a fantastic album opener. With sharp guitar chords, dizzying violins, and pure 60's/motown production, the album opens on a note of brass and string glory. A record that could easily go downhill , though, surprisingly does the opposite. The next two tracks, The Sweetest Thing & You Told a Lie, aren't the most prominent or melodic tracks on this record, but the Beach Boys-esque backing vocals and the jazz shuffle feel of the songs have them working well in context. My Maudlin Career continues in this fashion, concentrating more on quiet subtleties that make it's charm almost infectious.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE'S The Open Door [EP]

In my opinion, Death Cab For Cutie's latest EP, The Open Door, had the capability and, judging by it's single "Little Brides", potential, to be a great EP, showcasing the band stepping into new directions. What we find instead on this record, is Death Cab For Cutie, playing typical Death Cab For Cutie songs. Now, I complete agree with the fact that DCFC is a hardworking band, who have worked hard to establish a signature "sound", and that's absolutely fine. The problem that I have with this record is that it sounds as if the band is trying to step in a new direction, while keeping one foot in the door (PUN!). This has kept the record sounding cautious, and as self conscious as a teenage girl during gym class, which is odd for such an established band. Hopefully, this is just a fluke, and the next album from this phenomenal band will be up to par with last year's Narrow Stairs.

THFNS # 3: Lament for the Cassette

Oh, the cassette tape; teacher of trust, professor of failure, creator of confusion, lover of bubble baths. Oh, holy proprietor of youth, where art thou?
If you, like me, miss the days of bathing in the gentle hiss and splutter of cassette tapes, you may be asking your self, maybe in a less eloquent manner, the very same question. So, what happened to those days? What happened to the period of time where you could spend hours spread across the tiles, dubbing a carefully selected group of tracks for that current object of your affection? (Whether it be a man, woman, dog, cat, or mustache). In our culture of convenience, the once mighty and majestic cassette has been reduced to dollar bin thrift store material, like so many of us will be. Why did a tragic end have to come to this once heavy hitter in the music medium scene? The truth? It didn't. Cassette tapes are still alive and well today, not only snuggling the bottom of bargain bins around the world, but residing in the hearts, minds, souls and desks of people all around the world who refuse to let go of a piece of their youth.

So, how can I attempt to convince you that cassette tapes even stand a fighting chance against your "holier-than-thou" iPods? I don't have to because No Name No Slogan decided to do it for me.

So, after that convincing article, how could one STILL be against cassette tapes? (Please don't answer that question in the comment box, because I know you'll find a way to argue it)

The Importance of the Cassette

If the above subheading were to be asked in a question format, it would be a stupid fucking question. What ISN'T the importance of the cassette!? Besides being the ONLY legitimate form of mixtaping technology, the cassette tape has carved a culture onto its own in almost every country around the world.

When you take a step back and examine why cassettes have been/remain prominent in music, it's really not a difficult task. Not only are cassette tapes incredibly personal, but are a perfect way to showcase one's artistic capabilities. If you don't believe me, consider this question; how much time/effort/love does it take to drag 14 songs into an iTunes playlist, compared to the countless hours and preparation put into dubbing a cassette? Perhaps now you see what I mean.
I'm also rather convinced that the feeling one garners when dressing up their mixtape and attaching it to a snappy title is just short of ethereal.

But, you may be asking yourself, why can't I just make a mixtape and draw a cover for it? I'm certainly not stating that the cassette is superior to the CD overall, but I think it must be recogized for the indent that it left on our ability to mix our own music, and for leading the way for CD's and MP3's as well.

Therefore, I think a couple songs that have nothing at all to do with cassette tape are in order, to celebrate the tape in all it's spasmodical glory!

THFNS # 2: The Inevitable 90's Post

Happy Easter, to those of you who celebrate Easter, and Happy Sunday, to those of you who do not. Good evening (to those of you who celebrate the evening) and welcome to the second post in THFNS! I know that this post was supposed to be published in the middle of last week, but when I took a step back and actually reviewed the 90's, as a decade of music and film, in my mind, I realized it was far to vast to finish in an hour or so after school. Alas, now it is Sunday eve' though, and I am fully prepared to take on this enormous task. Enjoy it.

The 90's:

What do I think of when my restless mind flashes over the 90's!? Despite being born right in the middle of the decade, being too late to actually enjoy the luxuries of the 90's, the decade that I'm currently absorbed in is teeming with 90's nostalgia. So, let's take a peak at what exactly made the 90s become so nostalgic so quickly.

As well as being a fantastic (which really just depends on how you look at it) decade for music, the 90's also marked the beginning/ending of a whole slew of ... shit. Confused? Yeah, well, I made a little list.

An Unreasonably Lengthy List Of Things That "Went Down" In The 90s:

The wonderful poison that is the Internet became widespread, and the unholy blessing that is personal computers became common (I'm willing to bet that the pornography business skyrocketed).
The U.S, Canada, Europe and Asia became filthy fucking rich. Look to the previous post for one of the many reasons why.
The Soviet Union FINALLY fell.
Berlin Wall fell in Germany, leading to a reuniting of the country.
The enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on January 1, 1994, creating a North American free trade zone consisting of Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The Rwandan Genocide which began on April 6, 1994 until mid-July 1994 results in serious criticism of the United Nations and major countries for failing to stop the genocide.
Human Genome Project began.
Discovery of dark matter, dark energy, brown dwarfs, and first confirmation of black holes.
Apple introduces the iMac computer, initiating a trend in computer design towards translucent plastics and multicolor case design, discontinuing many legacy technologies like serial ports, and beginning a resurgence in the company's fortunes that continues unabated to this day.
The console wars, primarily between Sega (Sega Mega Drive (marketed as the Sega Genesis in North America, introduced in 1988) and Nintendo (Super NES, introduced in 1990), sees the entrance of Sony with the PlayStation in 1994, which becomes the first successful CD-based console (as opposed to cartridges). Development of the free Linux kernel is started by Linus Torvalds in Finland.
The U.S. animated television comedy series The Simpsons becomes a huge domestic and international success in the 1990s as well as the longest-running American animated series.
US president Bill Clinton was caught in a media-frenzied sex scandal over his intern Monica Lewinsky, first announced on January 21, 1998. After the U.S. House of Representatives impeached Clinton on December 19, 1998 for perjury under oath, following an investigation by federal prosecutor Kenneth Starr, the Senate acquitted Clinton of the charges on February 12, 1999 and he finished his second term.
The Columbine High School massacre occurred on April 20, 1999, in Littleton, Colorado when two student gunmen killed 12 students, a teacher and then committed suicide, making it the deadliest high school shooting in United States history.
Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur, and Notorious B.I.G. are the most publicized music-related deaths of the decade, in 1991, 1994, 1996, and 1997 respectively.
Seinfeld becomes highly popular.

The 90s in Music!:

When one thinks of the music of the 90s, one genre may come to mind quicker than others. That genre, of course, is grunge. Have you just slipped out of your mothers womb, or do you have another valid reason for not knowing what grunge is? We're here to help.

Grunge, which stemmed from "alternative" rock, emerged in the mid-80s around the D.C area, especially in Seattle. The basic themes and influence of grunge were the DIY ethics of the punk scene, metal scene and indie scene. The grunge scene formed itself around the independent Seattle label Sub Pop (for Subterranean Pop), but later became commercially successful with the release of Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten. In case you're wondering, the word grunge means "dirty" or "filthy". This term stemmed from the sound of the music, and from the unkempt hair, flannel shirts, and generally unwashed appearance of the scenesters. Grunge's most prominent bands were Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam.

Another genre of music that rose to popularity in this decade was Gangsta Rap and Hip hop. One of the main differences between Hip hop and Grunge is the fact that Hip hop has managed to stay relevant and incredibly popular today. At the beginning of the 90s, MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice make hip hop popular to the pop audience, and mark the beginning of hip hop's so far permanent place in pop music. Cliques start to form within the Hip hop industry, with feuds starting, and ending, between artists such as Notorious B.I.G and Tupac Shakur.

The last prominent genre of music that rose to popularity in the 90s was Indie Rock and it's many subgenres. One of the most prominent subgenre of indie (which stands for independent) music was the lo-fi genre. This included artists such as Elliott Smith, Guided By Voices, Pavement, and Neutral Milk Hotel, who recorded low fidelity music.

What was that? Do you vaguely recall a genre of music from the 90's that I haven't mentioned?
Well, it's called Boy Bands/Girl Bands, and I think it's closer to bat shit than music.

On this very fine Monday evening we will be taking a trip through the terrace of time to see what it is that makes nostalgia so appealing. This very tedious secret will be revealed each week in short installments that will reveal the superb music of various decades. Joel Plaskett born in 1975, in the incredibly small town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (unfavourably compared to Amherstburg, with less cattle). He grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia and now resides across the harbour in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Thrush Hermit

Mr. Plaskett formed his first band, Thrush Hermit, in 1992, alongside his "crew" Rob Benvie, Ian McGettigan, and Michael Canato. The band released their first EP in 94', Smart Bomb, while signed to the Murderrecords label, who are also home to a little band you might've heard of; Sloan. In 1996, the band signed with Elektra Records to release their second EP, The Great Pacific Ocean, but because Elektra Records are consumer driven assholes, they dropped the group shortly afterwards. Signed to Sonic Unyon, the indecisive group of young men released their most successful, and final, LP, entitled Clayton Park. The Clayton Park tour signified the band's final show. Since this fateful show, Thrush Hermit have regrouped once to close a Joel Plaskett Emergency show.

After the breakup of above mentioned Thrush Hermit, Joel embarked on a very successful solo career, which later involved a backing band, Joel Plaskett Emergency. I'm not going to go into the things Mr.Plaskett has done while in Joel Plaskett Emergency, because that would evolve into a 60 page thesis. Instead, here's a discography, and some MP3's.

Oh, Nintendo; the silver lining of my youth; the caviar burrowed inside the crackers and cheese that was my childhood; the opium to my inner-addict. Whatever thoughtless and terrible treacheries I was made to endure as a child, i.e visiting most of my family, visiting Leamington, were instantly nullified as soon as I set foot in my Aunt Betty's house, ran down stairs, positioned myself in the typical worship stance, and surrendered myself to the dull glow of the television. Here, I bonded with Mario, Luigi, Kirby, and a slew of others (not to mention my cousins!). Despite it's terrible (or classic) graphics, the ethereal qualities of the 8bit soundtrack, and bright red and blue hues were enough to make me tolerate having to take out the game every 5 or so minutes to blow as hard as I could, just to make it work (sexual jokes abound, I bet).

As you can see, I belonged to the Nintendo just as much as the Nintendo belonged to me. Whatever the status of our relationship was, it was definitely a heavyweight in my childhood boxing ring. That's why I'd like to make this post the first indication of what's to come; The Holy Fucking Nostalgia Series! What started with an epically sprawling conversation in the last posts comment box had me thinking of all the things I used to do, and therefore, was the reason for this little series. The Holy Fucking Nostalgia Series, or THFNS for short, will run once weekly, during the month of April. Each post will highlight... well, I'll leave it a secret, but it's sure to be phenomenal.

Here's a little illustration of what is to come. Below are various covers (and a complete tracklisting) of classic rock songs, made even fucking better by the fact that they're done completely as 8-bit instrumentals. I almost wet myself.

Good morning, world! Today is Sunday, one of my seven favourite days of the week, yet this Sunday is unique, as it is the very start of my Spring Break. With the amount of work, responsibilities (I have little, yet I enjoy complaining), and band practices weighing down on me like a enormous, atomic paperweight, I'm instantly illuminated thinking of the fact that it's over (for a week, at least). So without further adieu and bravado, have a ridiculously merry Sunday, and enjoy today's post.

Jack White Has Too Much Spare Time, I Think He Needs To Learn How To Do Sudoku/Yodel

As the subheading above these words states; Jack White has too much goddamn time on his blessed, musically adequate hands. So what does Jack White do with this surplus of time? Answer: He starts bands. These bands don't end up recording an EP, playing a mini-tour, and then disbanding. No, they become ludicrously popular, and awesome, i.e The White Stripes & The Raconteurs. Now it seems as if Jack White has canceled a lunch meeting somewhere, and had enough extraneous time to start a band. Good on you, Mr. White.

Jack White (of White Stripes fame), Allison Mosshart (of The Kills fame), Jack Lawrence (of The Raconteurs fame), and Dean Fertita (of Queens of the Stone Age fame) have decided to button up their coats, and form a band.

I'm, personally, intrigued by this band, and interested to hear the new album. Information below, sweethearts.

Hello, good evening, grand audience, and welcome to the Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice cabaret! Today, we have a very exciting (unless you don't find it exciting, in which case, it's not exciting) post, which will feature a new St. Vincent song, I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody's Business, and a little message from our friends at Interpol. So, put a helmet on, get yourself a glass of water, and prepare your mind for this weeks edition. Enjoy.

A Message From Interpol?

"It's been a long time. We shouldn't have left you...

After the touring for OLTA came to an end, we all dispersed to tend to our individual personal lives.
...And to get our ducks in a row.

Now the band has reconvened, and we are rehearsing new songs.

We find ourselves marveling at the tremendous focus
that has defined our early rehearsals for this, our 4th effort.

All kidding aside, we feel like a new band.

Once again, we have no concept to this batch of song-writing.
(We are often asked about our intentions when we set out to write music.)
There is rarely any intention to this process.
We just make the music.

And without going into too much detail, the songs sound vital.

It's as though we've hit upon a balance between our urgency and
our calm. And true to our better work, this is music that unravels over time.

We anticipate that, once it's done, you high-minded folks will welcome the music...
into your bedrooms...to swagger and breathe...

It's still early, yet, though. We will keep you posted.

In the meantime, a couple of us have kept ourselves busy with extra-curricular activities. Carlos has made a film called My Friends Told Me About You and Sam has released a record with his band Magnetic Morning.

St. Vincent's Actors!

St. Vincent, the clever moniker for Ms. Annie Clark, is back with her sophomore album this May, entitled Actors. Ms. Clark wrote/arranged the 11 songs and sings, plays guitar, bass, and keys, but brought on some additional players like Hideaki Aomori (Sufjan Stevens), Alex Sopp (Björk, Phillip Glass), and increased the rhythm section with Midlake's McKenzie Smith and Paul Alexander. There's also French horn, violin, sarongi, bass, and percussion. I definitely felt inadequate after reading that list as well, so don't feel bad. '

Good morning, morning, morning, morning, afternoon. Today is a wonderful day, not because the sun is shining, not because there are actually humane temperatures outside, and not because a new Wilco album is being released this June. The reason for today's wonderfulness is a combination of the previous stated reason, which can be summed up in a simple sentence; Today is the last day of February. There may not be a universal dislike for the month of February, yet I can't help but harbor a disdain for the said month in my heart. Perhaps it's because the weather is (for the most part) macabre, maybe it's because I always forget the unnecessary first "R" when spelling the word, whatever the reason, I'm not a zealot of February. Therefore, I'm glad that it's over. Onwards? I should think so.

New Wilco Album? This June? Bitchin'!

As you have probably already gathered from the title of the above inconspicuous subheading, Wilco is releasing a new album this June. Rolling Stone's Smoking Section got a special preview of seven songs on the new Wilco album, and they absolutely raved that it sounded like "a home run". Yankee Hotel Foxtrot? I think not. I still have high hopes for this album though. Good evening universe, and welcome to another exhausting day, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. I'd like to start this soirée by laying myself on the table, and sincerely apologizing. I am sincerely apologizing because I had prepared a post, as well as two mixtapes, for Valentines Day, Presidents Day (US) and Family Day (Canada, also known as StupidHolidayLand). Just the fact that I had the time on all of those holidays, as well as the resources, yet failed to even post, makes me shudder uncontrollably and shake with a self-loathing. So, for the sole reason that most of the world (spare approximately 5 lucky souls) did not get to hear an ass kicking Valentines Mixtape, I am truly remorseful. Anyways though, the earth is going to keep gravitating around the sun, Christmas will keep occurring on December 25th, and political imbroglios will continue to be prevalent, so, no serious harm has been done. Onwards? I think so!

This is the first post I've written since my arrival from Quebec, and to start it off, I'd like to formally thank my dear friend, and cousin, Joseph, for doing a wonderful job of keeping things in order while I was away. As you know, he did a fantastic job, and I am definitely looking forward to some more oft contributions.

Tonight is probably not the best time for me to be writing a post, I feel it necessary to point that out. This week, even, has been such an odd time in my life, that anything I say/do cannot really be held to me, as I think I may legally have some sort of temporal mental disorder. I've felt some intense happiness, bitter sadness and alarming neutrality, among other indescribable emotions. I've pondered existential things, I've pondered hilarious things, and I've had incredibly detailed discussions on the consistency of mashed potatoes, and the warrants of manliness in modern society. Needless to say (perhaps because I've already spent an entire paragraph saying it?), I've had a helluva week.

I think the only reason I may be writing this, is the guilt that I feel for not having posted in such a long period of time. Regardless of all that, I'm posting right now. I haven't really prepared for a post, as you can already see by the obvious state of this one, and I'm not even on my own computer. Alas, I will write!

So, I just finished watching the movie Doubt, which featured the mind-boggling Meryl Streep, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is one of the many objects of my affection. It was an astounding film, which left me doubting even my own thoughts, and even resulted in a yelling match between my mother and I over the conclusion. I highly recommend this film for anyone... with eyes and ears?!

I just realized that Valentines' day is in six days, and readers of this here blog can definitely expect a post of... manic proportions the day before. The reason the post is not going to be on the actual date of Valentines' day, is because I will be at a wedding. I can tell you as of now though, that said post will include a two disc mixtape (I'm sure you can guess the theme), photos of my The Smiths/The Cure/The Stooges patented black valentines, and my list of favourite romantic songs/films/books/albums. I hope you thoroughly enjoy it!

I sincerely apologize for the absence of any music at all in this post, but I'm sure you can understand that the conditions it is being written under are not exactly ideal. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, and regular posts (that include music!) will resume on Monday, as well as an exciting new idea that I'll be running by you.

Good morning to everyone who is currently reading Looks Like Coffee Tastes Like Juices (Unless your in different times zones). Prior to Norman temporary leaving for Quebec I was asked to look after the blog for the week and I will be posting another entry hopefully tomorrow. If some of you readers and commenter alike don’t remember me or never had the chance to forget me I am Norman’s not so long lost cousin who happens to be called Joseph.

I made a few posts when the blog was still new this was before Norman’s high school shenanigans but then I accidentally fell through a portal to another dimension full of strange creatures and hidden secrets which lead me to become inactive for several months. I greatly apologize for my inactivity but enough with phony half true excuses I promise that I will contribute more towards your blog. I am although extremely happy to say that this blog has grew in everything imaginable from the people viewing from the contents you can find in it, thank you very much for posting in the blog and continuing to make it active. You see the sub-heading above this?! Well, that's how I feel when I listen to Sonic Youth. Sure, I love them as much as any other snobby hipster does, yet, at least I can admit that they, pardon my french, confuse the living fuck out of me. I choose to continue listening to their music though, because sometimes I enjoy being confused, and, well, they're fantastic. You see, the reason I'm even writing about Sonic Youth right now, is because they're releasing another album. This new album, which may or may not be entitled The Eternity (uncharacteristically metal?), is going to be released on their new record label, Matador. Not much is known about the new album, but Thurston Moore had this to say;

The album will feature more than a few "heavy ass weirdo hooks" and that "it's rock-centric, but still experimental...I still don't know how to play the guitar."

Needless to say, I'm a little bit excited.

New Decemberists!

There is a new Decemberists song that was released (sans money!) on their website today. It is called The Rake Song, and will be included on their new full length, The Hazards Of Love.

I'm not completely happy with this song, as it starts to get a little annoying at the end. I think the Decemberists have started to concentrate a little more on capping songs off at the three and a half minute mark, then actually creating quality songs. Y'know that's just me though, maybe I'm just another fan yearning for those Picaresque days?

Regardless of my opinion, give the song a listen. The Hazards Of Love is out 3/24 via Capitol.

Bonjour mes amis! Welcome to another week of Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice goodness. This week has been particularly fruitful in the world of music, with releases from Animal Collective (you have NO idea how strongly I feel about this) and The Steps. Jesus, in hindsight, it really hasn't been a fruitful week for the music world. I guess that we'll have to make the best of it. So, enjoy. Onward, Russia!

The Steps' Steps

If you live outside Austin, Texas, or Japan, you most likely don't know who The Steps are. Hey, you might not even care. This is my blog though, so I'm going to tell you about The Steps.

The Steps are: Will Thompson (vocals and guitar), Sam Thompson (lead guitar), Stephen Ross (bass), and Z Lynch (drums). In 2005, the band took flight on a journey to bring a classic sound back to modern rock. Making their home in Austin, a city with a voracious appetite for music, The Steps became darlings of the rock scene with their incendiary live performances.

In 2007, The Steps went into the studio with producer Chris "Frenchie" Smith (Dandy Warhols, IV Thieves) and emerged with an album that caught immediate international attention. Young and Lost Club Records in the UK released a 7" vinyl single, Outlaw, in November 2007. Shortly thereafter, Japanese label, Kurofune Records decided to release the full album. Having toured both countries, The Steps continue to prove their mettle on the world stage.

I suppose you know the band just as well as I do now, but it's impossible to really KNOW the band, without hearing their debut record, The Steps. The Steps is, essentially, a good record, but it is made even better by the little tidbits of other bands that can be uncovered once you sit and peel through the music. My personal favorite track on the album, Cold Floors, screams with echoes of Jonathan Richman (of The Modern Lovers) mixed with the angst-ridden wails of Mick Jagger. Yes, you can make your Strokes comparisons here, but just try and tell me that The Steps aren't an original band, and I'll call you a filthy liar. Sure, they've obviously borrowed concepts and attitudes (and maybe even some chord progressions?!) from other very well known bands, but The Steps create something that is, described at best, exciting to listen to. One could mask this spark of originality under heaps of comparisons, but it remains clear; The Steps are a band who are at least worth listening to. Besides, if Will Thompson's perfectly idiomatic drawl doesn't make you want to keep listening, there is not much I can do.

Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion

Okay, here's the deal. I was going to review this record. Honestly! I'm not just being lazy! I sat down, listened to it, and wrote down a slew, a cornucopia, of wonderful things to say, glowing words of praise. But, c'mon, EVERY OTHER FUCKING BLOG IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE HAS REVIEWED THIS RECORD! Most of them have proclaimed the same thing as well, "This is the best album of 2009." Even though we're only 11 days into 2009, they're probably right. This album IS amazing. It's fantastic, it's a reason for people who don't enjoy Animal Collective to take umbrage, because I can't think of any reason why one wouldn't be pleased to hear this record.

The album starts with a susurrus, and ends (dear God) with the melting of some major organs. Don't really understand what I mean? Here, I'll show you.

Animal Collective definitely proves that blips and bleeps, screaming and Strawberry Jam, can most likely be the most canorous thing I've ever heard.

Right now is a very special time of day; it is that ethereal time of the year, right between Christmas Eve and Christmas. I hope that I'm not needed to elaborate, as thoughts of sleeping children, and old creeping men should already be in your head, yet, if they're not, hopefully this post will help you get into the Christmas mood. As for me, if anyone is interested, I'm in a wonderful state of complete bliss, and there are so many things that can roll smoothly from my fingertips into this keyboard, talking of magic and Christmas, but I chose self control. Jesus Christ! If Lil Wayne could have better cover art ... I don't know, I don't even think it'd be possible. I feel bad for the folks at the Oxford English Dictionary, because now they have to change the pictures underneath the words "badass", "asskicking", and "epic". Well, such is life.

Good evening universe, and welcome to another fantastically Sunday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. This week has been just as hectic and inane as most other weeks of my existence, except this particular week is different. The reason this weekend is so very different, is because, for some unknown reason, Christmas is upon me. Now, I realize that it is still early November, and Christmas is a ways away. Still, something about the cold of this weekend, coupled with my 3534785430198571st viewing of A Christmas Story, has gotten me into the mood for Christmas. So, besides the regular new music goodness, today's post will include a very brief sneak preview, of what promises to be this years very extensive Christmas Mixtape.

Always The Bridesmaid; Never The Bride

The Decemberists have released their Always The Bridesmaid Vol.3 Single. The A-Side from said single, is a wonderful track entitled "Raincoat Song". It's very different from the other singles they have recently released, as it's very short, simple, and effectively sweet. Instead of giving you some inaccurate description of the song (it is objective, of course), you can listen to it here, via YouTube. Enjoy.

As you might be able to tell, November has ultimately changed me, and I feel like a new man this month.
