He's a WHAT? He's a WHAT? He's a newspaper man.

Good evening friends, and welcome to another week, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. It seems the music world has been especially slow this week, so I've decided that today I will post my official Autumn mixtape (seeing as Autumn officially began 6 days prior to this post), some MORE TV on the Radio (I know I never get tired of them), and I'll also have a short piece about the new, up-and-running Sub Pop Singles Club. So, enjoy as you may.

TV on the Radio rock the shit out of David Letterman ... AGAIN!

Wolf Like Me (the first time) ...

Dancing Choose (the second time) ...

No offense to David Letterman's house band (who're very good, by the way), but I'm pretty sure that position should be filled by TV on the Radio. Anybody with me?

The Sub Pop Singles Club

I was actually planning on posting this NEXT august (when it's completed), but because of the lack of music this week, I figured I'd offer up a sneak peak of what's to come. Actually, I decided I'll be lazy, and take advantage of the miracle of that is copy and paste.

"The Sub Pop Singles Club: The Return of the Return of Khan

The Sub Pop Singles Club is back, all tan and rested after a shockingly long sabbatical. It is a somewhat louche, world-weary thing with its eye on your wallet. And, for a price, The Sub Pop Singles Club is ready and willing to satisfy you aurally in ways you never dreamed possible.

Without further pandering, here are the facts!

Fact 1!
This run of The Sub Pop Singles Club will run for 1 year only, before returning to its secret island vacation spot for eternity (or until we here at Sub Pop feel masochistic enough to take on coordinating this debacle again.)

Fact 2!
This year’s Sub Pop Singles Club will include records (of the 7” variety) with music from such artists as Om, Unnatural Helpers, Tyvek, Black Mountain, Black Lips, Arthur & Yu, Mika Miko, Blues Control, Notwist, plus some stuff we’re not yet at liberty to divulge. And they won’t come out in that particular order, necessarily.

Fact 3!
We will mail you 1 record per month, every month for an entire year beginning on August 15th with a fantastic pair of songs from Om.

Fact 4!
For shipments to North America, you will pay us $75 in exchange for receiving this monthly boon from us. If you live elsewhere, in places outside of North America, we will require $90 from you.

Fact 5!
We will be pressing 1,500 copies of each single and so the number of subscriptions available for sale will be correspondingly limited. When these subscriptions are gone, that’s it!

Fact 6!
In addition to the singles themselves, each subscriber will receive a coupon enabling the download of high-quality MP3s of each record. No need to worry about how you’ll jam that 7” into your disk drive, we’ve got all you technophiliacs with your new-fangled gadgets covered.

Fact 7!
Subscriptions will be limited to 5 per person.

So here’s your chance to join the throngs of assholes selling their collectibles on eBay for ridiculous sums! All you have to do is: SEND US YOUR MONEY!"

And guess who's a subrscriber? Me! Well, my brother Jon, but myself by association.

Anyways, in August (of next year), I'll be posting mp3's for EVERY SINGLE TRACK. I know, I love me as well. So look forward to that.

The Official Looks Like Coffee Tastes Like Juice Autumn Mixtape (Part 1):

Looks Like Autumn, Tastes Like Pie

1. Autumn's Child - Devendra Banhart

2. Autumn Sweater - Yo La Tengo

3. Autumn's Here - Hawksley Workman

4. My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion - The Flaming Lips

Expect parts 2 and 3 (that include some songs that are NOT painfully obvious choices) ... some other time.

Why don't you put up a fight?

Currently Listening: Soft Airplane - Chad VanGaalen
Currently Watching: Boondock Saints
Currently Reading: Stranger Music - Leonard Cohen

If anybody is wondering, I thought the above thing would be interesting and add a bit of a personal touch the posts. As always, feedback is greatly welcomed, especially if it is of the positive variety.

ANYWAY

Hello dear world, and welcome to another week of pointless existence (this is how I begin to talk after the whole excitement of a new school year has worn off), here on Looks Like Coffee Tastes Like Juice. It's been a rather hectic week, as I've had family from Florida down, been just about everywhere, and finally got around to watching Burn After Reading (which was excellent by the way, but no The Big Lebowski). So, getting on to the actual content of today's post, we'll be having; TV On the Radio, Jack White & Alycia Keys and Calexico join us in sound today. Enjoy.

Calexico's Carried to Dust

If you couldn't tell by the subheading, Calexico have just released their new album, which is entitled Carried to Dust. For those of you who are unaware of Calexico's existence, fear not, I will accommodate.

Calexico are a ________(Insert a trillion genres) band, formed in 1996, by Joey Burns and John Convertino. They are from Tuscon, Arizona, have released 6 albums, and make fantastic music. That's all you really need to know.

Speaking of fantastic music, their new album is no exception. Filled with the beautiful melodies, harmonies and all things Calexico that make up the band's unique sound, it's definitely an album that warrants repeated listening. The reason I'd recommend repeated listening is because this album, much like their early material, has a very upfront appeal to it, but after that's stripped away by recognition, you start to realize the subtle complexity buried deep within the wall of sound. As each instrument, each tiny regiment of this wonderful album make themselves clear, you learn something new about this album. And as always, there is a lot to learn.

Two Silver Trees- Calexico (Off Carried To Dust)

Ocean of Noise (Live Arcade Fire Cover) - Calexico

James Bond Mothah Fuckah's

That's right, there is going to be a new James Bond movie coming out in about two months, entitled Quantum of Solace. Yeah, I know, could the name get anymore bad ass? Well, I'm sure everyone's already heard about this movie, and subsequently, it's Jack White/Alycia Keys theme song (which was helped by the Jack-White-angering Coke Zero ad). So instead of going into details, here's the mp3, the trailer, and the coke ad.

Another Way To Die - Jack White & Alycia Keys

TV On the Radio's Dear Science

I have just finished listening to the new TVOTR album Dear Science for the 4 time, and like a previously mentioned record (**cough**Calexico**cough**) this album DEFINITELY gets better with listen. At the first listen this seems like a difficult prospect, seeing as the album is already fantastic, but rest assured, it definitely does improve. For fear of repeating myself like a broken record, let me just say that this album also has a subtle complexity about it, which is now expectant of TV On the Radio after the masterpiece Return To Cookie Mountain.

What is about this record that makes it so good though? The songs! So, take a listen to my personal favorites from the record, and then run/bus/walk/drive/fly/ski/rollerblade to your nearest record store on September 23rd, and BUY IT. Dear god, ignore the awful album cover and just buy it.

It won't be easy leaving everything behind, but let's leave everything behind.

Good afternoon world, and welcome to another week of Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. This week is sweltering and boiling, made even more irritating by the constant threat of rain above us. Anyways, today's post promises to be a good one, and it'll include some, a) new Portastatic, b) new Chad VanGaalen and c) older Kevin Drew. So, enjoy today's post.

Kevin Drew Covers New Order

Earlier this morning, as I was searching through my iTunes, I rediscovered a track that, although it seemed to be long forgotten, has always sort of been in the back of my mind. Certain times during the day, most which happen to be very inappropriate (science class, for example), I find myself either humming, or full out belting, the words to New Order's classic "Age of Consent". Needless to say, I'm very fond of this song. On a completely different note, I'm also very found, in a heterosexual way, of Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew. Now, what're the odds that these two objects of my affection should somehow collide? Not very good odds. Alas though, around November 27th, 2007, this very thing happened. This track has been on my computer for quite a while, but I only listened to it for the second time yesterday, and I can honestly say I've fallen in love AGAIN. Give it a listen.

Portastatic's Some Small History

On Tuesday, September 9th, Portastatic (the clever alias of Merge Records founder Mac McCaughan) will release their 2 disc, 44 song rarities and b-sides compilation, entitled Some Small History. Now, being a ridiculously devout Portastatic fan, I was very excited upon hearing this news. I was even more excited when I learned that Mr.McCaughan has been streaming the entire album for free on the Merge website. Here's the link:

Chad VanGaalen Releases Soft Airplane

Mr.VanGaalen, perhaps this blog's favorite Calgarian, is definitely worth calling a musical genius. His music is inventive, interesting, and undoubtably catchy and beautiful. What's that? You've never heard of Chad? Well, then, hide your shame my friend, because I'm about to inform you!

Chad VanGaalen is a Canadian musician and artist from Calgary, Alberta. Following a few scattered independent releases, done mostly on homemade CDs with hand-drawn art, VanGaalen released Infiniheart (2004) on Canadian independent label Flemish Eye. Infiniheart, a collection of songs selected from recordings made in his bedroom/makeshift studio, was picked up in 2005 by indie label Sub Pop. In late 2005, the album was re-released with a bonus six-song EP entitled Green Beans. On August 22, 2006, VanGaalen's second album, Skelliconnection, was released in the U.S. on Sub Pop and in Canada on Flemish Eye. The album is comprised of new songs as well as tracks previously released on his earlier independent recordings and features exclusive artwork and videos made by VanGaalen. On January 17, 2007, ChartAttack reported that Skelliconnection was #31 and had been on the chart for 19 weeks.

On July 10, 2007, Skelliconnection was revealed as being on the shortlist for the 2007 Polaris Music Prize. The winner was announced at a gala ceremony on September 24, 2007, with the prize going to the band Patrick Watson.

VanGaalen is also an illustrator and animator, and has made his own album artwork and animated music videos to accompany several of his songs, including "Clinicly Dead", "Flower Gardens", and "Red Hot Drops", as well as the Love as Laughter song "Dirty Lives".

Oh, Wikipedia, how you put my descriptive skills to shame.

Anyways, I have personally listened to the entire record and I can express to you how much I love it. How will I do that? Like this.

Gentle hum of the old machines

Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to a lovely, albeit boring Sunday, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. If anybody has been wondering (I'm sure none of you have), with the end of the summer behind us, the schedule, that ever changing, spontaneous, rarely followed schedule that I've made for myself, might actually be followed. That means the following will/might happen; a) a post every Sunday b) a post every Thursday and c) sporadic posts during the week. Hopefully, I can get out of my bad habit and actually start to follow that schedule. Anyways, now that I'm done rambling about my many shortcomings, I might as well get to the actual post. There's quite a bit of news in the music world this week, so be prepared for a long ass post. Enjoy.

Oh No Oh My!

Oh No! Oh My!, the fantastic Austin band, known primarily for their crazy catchy song "Walk In The Park", will be releasing their newest album in October. Yup, THIS October. Although, they ARE giving it away to several hundred fans, based on how many times they've listened to the band's material on Last.FM (Of course, I stopped using mine last week). So, if you're a Last.FM user, and subsequently an Oh No! Oh My! fan, then you might want to get on that.

Anyway, here's two tracks that will be featured on the release, straight from the Daytrotter session they did a while ago.

Be A Star - Oh No! Oh My!

Wham Bam Thank You Spaceman - Oh No! Oh My!

New Mountain Goats EP Featuring Kaki King

Instead of explaining it myself, I'll be just as lazy as Pitchfork, and just copy and paste from John Darnielle's website;

"The new Mountain Goats EP-- the one I mentioned a few weeks back, with the limited gatefold vinyl and the special cover art and the pay-whatcha-like download option (about which we'll tell you more once we sort everything out)-- is called Satanic Messiah. It has four songs on it, one per side at 45 rpm, the way God intended. Two songs are mainly piano and voice; the other two are mainly acoustic guitar and voice. This is the lineup:

A1 Satanic Messiah
A2 Wizard Buys a Hat
B1 Sarcofago Live
B2 Gojam Province 1968

The other news-- at which I hinted on my Flickr, here-- is that Kaki King and I, under a cloak of great secrecy, snuck into Baucom Road studios in western North Carolina last month and recorded the six-song Black Pear Tree EP together with Scott Solter producing. The record is presently at the pressing plant and the idea is to have copies ready on vinyl for tour, with a sleeve designed by Horse & Buggy press, and the first 200 on colored vinyl. People who know how I feel about Kaki's music can imagine what an honor it was for me to get to work with her. Here are the songs we played:

A1 Black Pear Tree
A2 Mosquito Repellent
A3 Bring our Curses Home
A1 Supergenesis
B2 Roger Patterson Van
B3 Thank You Mario but our Princess Is in Another Castle

We are both really excited to share this record with everybody. So excited in fact that here's one of the songs. On this one, I played piano and sang; Kaki played drums and glockenspiel, and also sang harmony. The song is sung from the point of view of Toad. If you know who Toad is, that's all I'll need to tell you. If you don't who Toad is, you better recognize."

There's no way to describe to you, in words at least, how excited I am about this. So, instead of using words, here's a track from the new album.

Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is In Another Castle - The Mountain Goats & Kaki King

Andrew Bird; A Non Animal?

Andrew Bird, the fantastic multi-instrumentalist from Chicago, Illinois, will be releasing his newest album, A Non Animal, sometime in 2009. For those of you who don't know anything about Andrew Bird (SHAME ON YOU!), here's a bit of info, shamelessly borrowed from Wikipedia.

"Andrew Bird (born July 11, 1973) is an American musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He was born in Chicago and currently splits his time between Chicago and a farm near the town of Elizabeth in northwest Illinois. His musical proficiency includes competency in the violin, whistling, guitar, mandolin, and glockenspiel. "

Mr.Bird has released 10, 3 of those are live albums, and A Non Animal is scheduled to be his eleventh. Not much is known about this album, expect for the fact that it will have 10 songs, three of which have been played live, and that the release will be followed by an all instrumental album.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah To Release A New Album, Probably On A Tuesday

Not much is known about the new album that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are currently recording. With that said, what we do know is that are playing a whole slew of shows on Tuesday, and ONLY Tuesdays. Which leads me to believe that their new album could be released on a Tuesday?

Well, that's all for this week.

From the forest, down to your grave ...

Hello dear world, and welcome to another beautiful Monday evening, here on Looks Like Coffee, Tastes Like Juice. I'd like to offer my apologies for not posting last night, but since today is going to be the follow-up to last week's "Back To School" Mixtape, I thought I'd post-pone yesterday's post. It does seem more appropriate to post today, seeing as tomorrow is the first day of school, which is what the mix is concerning. I'd also like to mention that I'm aware of the sporadic and iffy quality of the recent posts. I hope you can understand that I've been very busy/tired/lazy these last two weeks, preparing for school and such. Now that I've finally reached it though, I can confidently say that the post's will be more substantial and less.. iffy. So, without further ado, The Back To School Mixtape Part 2.
